Give your wallet the weekend off

10/3/2023

Do you find yourself overspending on the weekends? Would you prefer to save that cash for a new car, Christmas gifts, or a rainy day? We put together a list of tips to help you enjoy the weekend and give your bank account a break!

Volunteer

There are lots of volunteer opportunities in our community. Whether it’s picking up trash at the local park, walking dogs for the Animal Protective League, or helping at a charity event, there are great ways to spend your time giving back.

Library

Joining the library is free, and many offer activities for the kids. We’re not saying you shouldn’t visit your local bookstore. But if your bookshelves are bursting at the seams, maybe while you’re having a clear-out and taking unwanted items to Goodwill, you can stave off any temptation to make a purchase for a weekend or two.

Free entertainment

Fall is a great time for free or low-cost entertainment, from walks in the park, on the trail, by the lake, or through the pumpkin patch. There are art fairs, markets, fundraisers, and sports to keep the whole family entertained. Make sure you check out our guide to fall activities in central Illinois.

Eat for less

Eating out can get expensive, so look for discounts, offers, and savings. Local cafes will sometimes offer pastries at a sale price towards the end of the day. Better still, plan ahead and eat at home.

Compare fuel prices

Don’t just drive to the nearest gas station. Shop around while you’re out and about.

End goal

Keep your end goal in mind. Put aside $15 a day and save $5475 a year.
