Shopping for the holidays will look a little different this year

11/10/2020

Like many Americans, you may have already begun shopping for the holidays. Some of you might even be close to finishing. For those of you yet to start, we’ve put together a guide to shopping for the holidays in 2020.

If you want to avoid busy stores, you can always shop online – and support local businesses. A lot of local stores now offer online shopping, as well as in-person. It’s easy to find the ones that offer online shopping with a quick Google search, or you could get in touch with a store via their Facebook page. Many stores are still offering curbside pick-up so you can order ahead and then pay and collect your shopping from the comfort and safety of your vehicle.

When shopping, make sure you take advantage of our Secure Checking Shopping Rewards, which include:

  • Access to exclusive offers and discounts at thousands of leading online retailers
  • Shop online using our customized shopping portal and receive cashback
  • Registration/activation required. See guide to benefits for complete terms, conditions, and exclusions.

Shipping could become a nightmare for many larger retailers, so if you cannot find what you need locally – and are forced to go with a big box store – we recommend you order online sooner rather than later.  If you are purchasing items online, don’t forget to protect yourself from cyber-attacks. The kinds of gifts you purchase this year may be different too. It is likely most will be in a similar situation, which means retailers may have a tough time keeping these items stocked. Comfy clothes – for working from home, home office and homeschooling accessories, and home décor are items all expected to fly off the shelves. So, if you are hoping to get your hands on any of these items, start here.

If you ordinarily spend much of the holidays eating out with family and friends but would prefer to stay home, you can still support those businesses by purchasing gift cards and ordering takeout.

To reduce what could be a frantic shopping experience in the coming weeks, we recommend getting started sooner rather than later.
